Insurance companies battle to keep kids alive and driving

Of the proposals, Director General of the ABI said, "Every day, four people are killed or seriously injured in crashes involving young drivers. The trend is getting worse not better. We urge the Government to adopt these proposals to improve safety on our roads and reduce this tragic loss of life."

The Department for Transport however, has already looked at proposals like these, and many more, for learner and new driver and decided no change to the current system was necessary.

Meanwhile, insurance charges for young drivers are easing. Rarely do 18-year-olds get the car that is most suitable for them instead it will just be the cheapest to insure.

Yet the biggest part of any budget is rarely put into the car, as it has to finance the massive annual premium until the young driver is able to build up a decent no-claims bonus.

After the nine months, the young driver starts to build up a no-claims bonus of up to 30 per cent. To score 40 per cent, he or she will have to take part in the Pass Plus scheme mentioned earlier.

The government-backed advanced driving course costs around £150 for six driving lessons (including motorway driving) taken after the young person has passed the standard driving test.

The Pass Plus advanced driving course is recognised by several insurers as a qualification for premium calculation. Some insurers in the UK, will offer up to a 50 per cent discount to those with a Pass Plus rating.
